July 2024

25 July 2024 – Richard. The Word: “tomorrow”.

Tomorrow – the things I must do tomorrow exceed all of the things I have done in the past, which is why I have so many undone things. But because tomorrow never comes it doesn’t matter because I can put off just about everything until tomorrow and never have to worry about having to do anything.

Who invented the concept of tomorrow? I reckon it is the same person who put things on stairs with instructions to take them to the top of the stairs as you “go by”. They are “go bys” so if I don’t go upstairs today I reckon I can have the idea of “go bys” and “tomorrow” together. Tomorrow is a politician’s dream. They can fill today with words and promises and never have to do anything because the doing can be deferred until tomorrow. What other words have a similar concept, a real word, but never actually requires a commitment to do? That Americanism “momentarily”, what a meaningless word – almost like “soon” – an indeterminate placeholder – fluff – a pause with no depth. When are you going to do this or that – “soon”. Okay so when is “soon”? When I get round to it, when I have time. No it is nothing to do with your time, it’s more to do with your commitment and motivation.

So is there some form of connection here? Motivation? Well procrastination starts to come into the picture now. Why do people procrastinate? Because there’s always tomorrow! So if tomorrow ceased to exist what could happen? There would of course be the day after. What would a lack of tomorrow actually mean? It is meaningless so the question is facile, it has no depth. There is no answer because tomorrow always exists, but it is transitory. Tomorrow only comes into existence at the moment of midnight, then in a flash, an infinitesimal moment of time, it ceases to exist because by magic tomorrow becomes today and all those things I put off till tomorrow cease to be relevant because they’ve gone. They have suddenly added another day to their lifespan, so don’t say tomorrow, put in an actual time and date when you want to do something that then allows you to procrastinate in reality because you can put off doing it until another time; delay for whatever reason you feel like. I’m not sure I can write much more so I’ll put it off until the next day, but if I leave it till then I can avoid doing it so tell you what – I’ll leave it till tomorrow.
